Nuclear Engineering: Theory and Technology of Commercial Nuclear Power
Published in Library Binding by Hemisphere Pub (01 September, 1992)
Average review score:

Great Overview Book for PE and Defense Exam PreparationThis book is a comprehensive overview of nuclear engineering topics. It is that ONE book if you must rely on just one. It is similar to the Glasstone book but newer and with better text. The explanations in the Reactor Physics and Kinetics chapters are great and easy to understand. I wish I'd had this book as an undergraduate; that Reactor Analysis course would have been much more understandable!

The Odd Boy and His Precious Piano
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (April, 2001)
Average review score:

Delightful Odd BoyI just finished reading Allen Howe's first collection of short fiction, "The Odd Boy and His Precious Piano." It's a charming book chronicling the thoughts and experiences of a bright, talented child from age 3 to 12, including some exciting and suspenseful situations. I enjoyed the stories for their humor, for giving voice to some of my own internal experiences, and for several haunting images that I am still processing.

Ode to the Cold War: Poems New and Selected
Published in Hardcover by Sarabande Books (April, 1997)
Average review score:

A Stunning CollectionAllen's poetry is careful, accessible, and beautiful. His poetry has regularly graced The Best American Poetry series as well as many literary magazines. If you only buy one poetry book this year, this should be it. If you like the work of Billy Collins, Philip Levine, or Jim Daniels, buy this book; Allen's poetry is significantly different (as it should be), but in the same realm as their work.

Oklahoma Sportfishing: A Complete Sportsman's Guide
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (June, 2002)
Average review score:

Oklahoma Sport Fishing by John Allen GiffordI'm very happy with my copy of Oklahoma Sport Fishing by John Gifford. I'm an avid bass angler and refer to Mr. Giffords book before each trip to the lake.
Mr. Gifford does a great job detailing how to fish for multiple species of fish throughout the seasons in Oklahoma lakes. Even though the book is written about Oklahoma lakes, the tactics could be helpful to anglers in other states with similar lakes and species.
Besides being very informative to fishermen, Mr. Gifford's story telling style is very entertaining! I read the book cover to cover and now use it time and again to prepare lake to lake, season to season. My fishing has improved noticeably since reading Oklahoma Sport Fishing!

On Granddaddy's Farm
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (October, 1989)
Average review score:

Granddaddy's FarmWhile not growing up on a farm myself, I do live in the approximate area in which Thomas B. Allen's story, On Granddaddy's Farm, takes place. Allen has certainly captured the essence of the locales he mentions in the story. His words paint pictures and evoke the smells that one encounters on a farm. The characters bring to life all that a country family experiences during not only this time in history, but also in some aspects of today's fastly disappearing farm family. Granddaddy's insistance of the work ethic, Granny's always being there to watch over and provide for the children, the rhythm of the train's always dependable schedule all elicit the "protectiveness and dependence" of a time we all have enjoyed or longed to enjoy in our own lifetimes.

On Moral Medicine: Theological Perspectives in Medical Ethics
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (April, 1998)
Average review score:

A definitieve work for those interested in medical ethics. This is an excellent book to be used as an advanced primer or survey of Christian theological
persepctives on ethics. From Barth to Raushenbusch to modern scholars, Protestant and Catholic, this book contains excellent essays and articles and even a prayer and Scripture exerpt or two. An excellent starting point for those interested in medical ethics--but VERY comprehensive; covers issues from patient-doctor relationships to health care distribution. I read it in an "Ethics and the Professions" course at Princeton Seminary.

Published in Hardcover by Time Life (May, 1999)
Average review score:

wonderful recipesI have yet to read a William-Sonoma cookbook that did not have wonderful pictures and equally wonderful tasting dishes. This book lived up to my expectations. I would recommend this as a must for anyone who cooks frequently, especially vegetarians out there or people who are looking to decrease the amount of meat they eat. You'll never miss it with this recipe!
